THX What Is It ?

THX is dedicated to developing new ways to make the creation, delivery and presentation of entertainment content more efficient, more powerful and more enjoyable. Today, the world’s premier commercial cinemas, post-production studios, car audio systems and home entertainment products incorporate THX technologies and have achieved the coveted THX Certified status. THX is not a method of encoding sound, but has to do with quality certification.

THX is the patent name given to a distortion-free sound reproduction system created mainly for movie theatres, screening rooms and high-definition home theatre systems. It is also incorporated in computer speakers, gaming consoles and car audio systems.

THX is actually a division of Lucasfilm that proclaims itself to be dedicated to bringing the sound reproduction of films in both theaters and in homes as close as possible to that which was intended by the filmmaker.THX is the brainchild of audio pioneer Tomlinson Holman, who was looking to set out a performance standard for theater sound. THX-certification then spread to home theater.

THX is just a standart which gives the quality of sound. THX has some std rules for 5.1 if these are met then the sound quality is said to be at THX std.

THX is merely a quality assurance specification for the likes of Dolby Digital, SDDS, etc. Its a guarantee that when a film leaves the editing room and shown in a THX certified theater, it will sound exactly as the audio engineers of the film intended it to.THX is a certification system for theaters. It is like quality control for the movie-going experience.

To achieve THX Certification, home theatre products must meet or exceed our performance requirements under "normal" playback functions. For receivers and controllers, we also add patented post-processing features such as ReEQ, Timbre Matching, Adaptive Decorrelation, Adaptive Speaker Array and Boundary Gain Compensation. When a product switches video, we test it to guarantee that it does not degrade the signal. If a manufacturer claims that their product can switch HD, we test that, otherwise we test it for SD signals. THX Ltd. does not test for product longevity and we do not test "custom" or "DSP" modes such as Cathedral, Sports and room compensation.
