Yamaha YBA-10WH Bluetooth Wireless Audio Receiver For Yamaha Home Theater Receivers

The ultimate deciding factor for me to go with a Yamaha receiver (RX-V465) was the ability to wirelessly sync my laptop and receiver together with their YBA-10 bluetooth device.

Initially I was able to easily pair my lap top and the YBA-10 without any problem. However, on subsequent uses I have had to re-pair or tinker with the device to get it to work. I’m not 100% it is the device’s fault every time but sometimes it would “Connect” without the blue light of the YBA lit up and the music would still come out of my lap top.

Other times I would have no music coming out of my lap top and the light would be lit up for the YBA-10 but no music out of the receiver’s speakers. On the lap top, I would right click the icon for the YBA-10 and open up the “status” window and see that my information would be sent but alas, no music.

Ultimately, its takes a couple of minutes to tinker around but I get it to work each time I want to use it. I LOVE not using any wires and am thoroughly pleased with the sound quality (no loss from what I can tell). Well worth the price. I would recommend it but would caution those people who are “computer illiterate” beyond using the internet or word processor.

Trouble shooting note - if you have music coming out of the lap top, always try re-pairing. The process is tedious but only takes a couple minutes.

Display Cover Art

IPod owners will be thrilled to know that the RX-V1065, RX-V2065 and RX-Z7 display cover art along with the song information on the TV via the Graphic User Interface. For your iPod, simply hook up the optional YDS-11 iPod dock. Rhapsody (available on the 2065 and Z7) uses the single ethernet connection on the back panel of the receiver to display cover art and song information. Press the Menu button on the remote control to bring up the new full-color graphic user interface, and get started!

*For better quality picutures when using an iPod, consider uploading your own to iTunes instead of using the stock images.

Yamaha YDS-11SL Universal iPod Dock

The YDS-11SL dock is compatible with all the latest iPods, including the iPod touch, iPod nano, iPod mini, and iPod Classic while still providing the easiest way to connect and control your iPod from dock enabled Yamaha products. I ordered the YDS-11SL Dock for my iPhone since it said it supports the iPod Touch, gambling that I could view videos and slide shows. Sure enough, it worked and I got excellent quality on my 52" flat TV connected to my Yamaha HTR-6080 A/V receiver. When I first connected the iPhone, it said the connected device was not compatible. But I selected the iPod icon on the iPhone. I watched a video that I downloaded from iTunes into my iPhone, and also watched a slideshow of the photos downloaded from my computer to the iPhone. Very pleased with my purchase of this unit.

Virtual Cinema DSP

Virtual Cinema DSP is a feature found on Yamaha's RX-V series receivers. It essentially allows users to enjoy surround sound even if they are not using rear speakers. In fact, all you really need are two speakers for this feature to be effective.

Virtual Cinema DSP uses the same advanced DSP chip that is normally reserved for actual surround sound speakers, and in their absence generates virtual surround sound speakers using sophisticated HRTF (Head Related Transfer Function) technology.

In order to activate Virtual Cinema DSP, use the YPAO microphone for automatic speaker detection or go into the manual set up menu on the receiver and turn “Sur. L/R SP” to none. This will deactivate any rear speakers and activate V DSP. Virtual Cinema DSP will work in almost any receiver mode with the exception of using headphones, using the Pure Direct feature, and when 7ch Stereo is selected.

Cinema DSP 3D

One of the most incredible improvements our Yamaha engineers have made over the last few years has to be Cinema DSP 3D which helps make regular surround sound extraordinary surround sound. Cinema DSP 3D is revolutionary in how it meshes with traditional discrete surround sound formats like Dolby Digital and DTS and enables a whole new sense of realism as a result. This feature utilizes extra effects speakers or “Presence Speakers” which are placed high and left or right to their corresponding front main speakers. Presence speakers are nothing new for Yamaha, but how they are used is what makes CINEMA DSP 3D so effective. Previously, our Presence Speakers operated on their own, isolated from the other discrete channels of audio giving a little se nse of height to the surround sound experience. Now they are part of the action because our new DSP processing allows them to interact with the front main speakers. This means that the Presence Speakers give a much better sense of width and height (scale) to the room. Simply put: instead of the helicopter sounding as if it were flying around the listener, it now sounds like it is flying over the listener with floor to ceiling sound. If You wants  some eye popping surround sound, I recommend The RX-V665 and up to deliver it with CINEMA DSP 3D technology.

2 HDMI Outputs? Why?

Yamaha receivers starting with the RX-V2065 have dual HDMI outputs. What do these outputs do for You?

Having dual HDMI outputs that play the same thing allows a custom installer or you to use the receiver in more applications.

1. The home theater aficionado will appreciate the dual HDMI outputs to allow him or her to use a bright LCD or Plasma display during the day with all the window shades open to watch TV. At nighttime however, his or her media room can become a theater which has a large, drop-down screen to watch epic scale movies in all their glory. Both displays will get the same pristine quality video through HDMI.

2. The gamers delight is typically a system consisting of a home theater area with a nearby bar area or pool table. Having dual HDMI outputs will allow for the highest quality video to be sent both to the home theater area and a TV above a bar, near a pool table or perhaps in a workout room.

The next ideas are up to you. What you use the extra HDMI output for can be unique and useful!

Create a Music Server

With the advent of networked receivers like the Yamaha RX-V2065 and Yamaha RX-Z7 a networked based media server is a great benefit. Create your own server using a NAS drive. A NAS drive or networked attached storage drive is a hard drive that can plug directly into your wireless router and be accessed by all networked devices around the home. A 1 terrabyte unit offers a lot of storage and can be purchased for about $150 in many cases. Simply take your NAS drive (be sure it is DLNA ready) and plug it via an ethernet cable (like CAT5) into your wifi router. Turn on your computer, load your NAS drive with all of your MP3s and WMA music files* and make sure your Yamaha receivers are hooked up to the same network using ethernet cables.** Some inital setup may be required to allow the NAS drive to s hare music around the house so see the product manual for instructions on how to do this. When completed, all of your music will be stored in one central location where all of your computers and your networked Yamaha products can access it and you do not even have to keep a computer turned on!

Don't have wifi or want to use your home network? Some receivers like the Yamaha RX-Z7 have a USB connection that will allow you to plug an external hard drive*** directly into the back and access your music that way.

Extended Surround

A common question in regards to home theater is, "How does a 6 or 7.1 system actually play audio out of those extra speakers?" This is an especially good question since there is not much material available that is actually recorded in 7.1. The answer is in the internal receiver decoder chosen and the DSP mode you choose. If your customer has paid for all 7 speakers, then giving him or her sound out of all of them has never been easier.

First, choose a source and press the OPTION button on the remote. Then, scroll down to EXTENDED SUROUND and press ENTER. Choose a decoder: Pro Logic II Movie or Music; EX or ES; or Auto. Any of these modes will simulate a signal to those extra speakers, thus giving you 7.1 surround sound. Help your customers get the most out of their systems by extending their surround sound options!

Silent Cinema

When people are trying to sleep, they do not want to be disturbed by other people talking, or moreover, by that plane crashing through the bedroom window while someone else is watching Con Air. To help preserve peaceful coexistence, we introduced the home theater industry to Silent Cinema. Silent Cinema uses Digital Sound Field Processing (DSP) technology in a unique application known as Head-Related Transfer Function (HRTF) to create 5.1 surround sound through a pair of 2 channel headphones. HRTF refers to how the ears receive sound and how that sound is then relayed to the brain. It was initially developed to allow pilots to determine from what direction a warning sound was coming from in case of an emergency. With HRTF, through the enormous computing power of the specially created 32-b it microprocessors, and using unique DSP technology, Silent Cinema makes the rock concert or earth-shaking movie captivate one person while the other person sleeps comfortably just a few feet away. Just plug in a pair of headphones and experience it for yourself. Silent Cinema is available on all receivers and HTIB systems.

Yamaha Receiver ID Code

One of the unique features found on Yamaha receivers is the capability to have and respond to more than one set of Infrared commands. Each receiver has two unique ID codes which come in very handy when being installed near other Yamaha receivers or similar equipment.

The default setting for a Yamaha receiver is ID code 1, but by accessing the ADVANCED SET MENU it can be easily changed to ID 2. The Advanced Set Menu can be accessed by powering down the receiver, then holding the STRAIGHT button while you turn the receiver back on. Use the program buttons to cycle through the options until you land on Receiver ID. Use the STRAIGHT button to change the ID code. Once the desired ID is set simply turn the receiver off and on again. Change the ID code on the remote control by pressing the CODE SET button until it blinks twice. Press the SETUP button on the remote and then enter “5020” to change to ID 2. To switch back to ID 1, enter code "5019."

Check your receiver's ID when looking for a way to get the best functionality out of product with similar ID code sets. And if you want to think outside of the box, how about using two RX-V765 receivers in a rack that will together provide up to 4 zones of audio and two 7.2 home theate

Yamaha Major Attractive Features

At Yamaha we have always had a knack for developing features that not only improve the performance of our receivers, but also improve the everyday functionality of them as well. Here are just a few of the major attractive features of our current RX-V*65 receivers:

1) Easy set SCENE buttons: This feature allows customers to set their favorite activities on the receiver and recall them easily from one button.

2) Dolby True HD and DTS Master Audio decoding (found on all receivers with four or more HDMI inputs).

3) Compressed Music Enhancer: Applies complex reverse algorithms to bring back to life compressed audio sources such as MP3, Radio, TV, and DVD soundtracks.

4) YPAO: Room Optimizer Software that employs an advanced Parametric EQ for each channel to ensure the best possible acoustic performance in any room.

5) Custom Features: Yamaha receivers have long been one of the most custom install friendly with easy to follow menus, huge IR code databases, Remote In/Out, 12 volt trigger, and system ID codes. These features ensure ease of use and functionality on a daily basis.

6) Cinema DSP: In regards to acoustic science and reproduction, our engineers typically set the standard. Every Yamaha receiver has decades worth of acoustic research and engineering behind it: most notably, our Cinema DSP processing which adds a whole new layer of realism to watching music and movies.

These features are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to our dedication to research, engineering, and customer satisfaction. Every year we strive to deliver more performance and lifestyle benefits, making our products more attractive than ever before.

Signal Info

Have you ever wondered what format the audio you were listening to was in, or the bitrate of your MP3, or even how many channels of audio are in your surround signal? Well don’t fret, we have the solution. At any time you can access this information with just a couple of buttons: First, choose a source and then press the OPTION button. From the OSD, scroll down until you are on SIGNAL INFO and press ENTER on the remote. You will now see the signal information, and it will display the following information:

Format: The format of the digital audio signal.

Channel: The number of input signal channels (Front/Surround/LFE, ex. 3/2/1).

Sampling: The sampling frequency per second in analog to digital conversion.

Bitrate: The bit rate of the input signal per second.

Yamaha makes it very easy to really see what is coming into your receiver, making it simple to choose what signals are the most effective and to make sure your sources are functioning properly.

Yamaha Home Theater Receivers

What Happens With Older HDMI Receivers?

Some of you have been wondering about the audio and video transmission via HDMI to older receivers. Did you know that receivers starting with the original HDMI (1.0) connection can receive full quality video up to 1080p and full resolution audio from Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio soundtracks?

How can you get this? Simply go into the setup menu of your Blu-Ray player and output PCM instead of Bitstream. By doing so you will get uncompressed digital audio and video with full abilities to access BD-Live. The only thing you will not see are the words "True HD" or "Master Audio" on the front panel of the receiver that you would get using Bitstream.*

*If you choose Bitstream, be aware that the BD-Live functionality will not work.

HDMI CEC

What is  HDMI CEC ?

Hdmi cec essentially is a feature that allows command signals to be passed over HDMI to connected equipment, thus allowing control over that device. For example, a manufacturer may support HDMI CEC for its TV and Blu-Ray player, and when these devices are connected and HDMI CEC is turned on, the television remote will be able to control the Blu-Ray player as well.

Yamaha receivers, starting with the RX-V765, have support for HDMI CEC in which they will allow these control signals to pass through to the connected equipment. Furthermore, these Yamaha receivers can support certain manufacturers' proprietary HDMI CEC. The RX-765 receivers (and models up) have support for VIERA LINK, which is the Panasonic version of HDMI CEC. Not only does the receiver then have the capability to pass the HDMI control signal, but it also has the capability to control connected equipment that supports it.

Straighten Up Pure Direct Mode

What are the differences between Straight mode and Pure Direct mode? Straight mode on the receivers bypasses our proprietary processing to give you each source as it is encoded and no more. This works for digital and analog sources and is capable of utilizing all speakers and the subwoofer depending on the material being used. Pure Direct mode is very unique. Pure Direct mode will give you the cleanest, most natural sounding music through your speakers that you will ever hear from a receiver. Simply press the Pure Direct button on the front panel. All the processing will be bypassed and the front video panel will be turned off to diminish any possible distortion. You will hear music as you have never heard it before - exactly as it is recorded. Pure Direct mode works for any type of connection from analog to HDMI. The amount of processing that is bypassed is determined by the type of connection used.

*Direct mode on the entry level RX-V_65 series receivers is similar to the straight mode above but disables the use and display of the option/setup menus while also dimming the front panel. It also bypasses the DSP sound modes and tone controls.

Automatically Amazing: YPAO

Present on every receiver starting with the RX-V465, the Yamaha Parametric Acoustic Optimizer, or YPAO, serves to quickly setup your speakers to make sure your system is specifically tailored for you. What does this nifty little microphone measure with those test tones?

1. Speaker wiring is checked to make sure everything is hooked up correctly to prevent damage to the speakers or receiver.

2. The correct speaker distances are configured so the sound from all 7.1 speakers reaches you at the same time.

3. Individual Speaker size is determined so that your speakers only play frequencies that they were designed to play. We do not want your little 3" cube speakers playing a bass note only designed for a 12" subwoofer!

4. Each speaker is customized for the room to diminish the effects of poor room acoustics using a very advanced Parametric EQ system.

5. Finally, the speakers are individually calibrated so that all your speakers are the same volume at the main listening area.

Simply plug in the supplied microphone and press enter on your way out to get a cold beverage. When you get back to the living room 3 minutes later, you can put the mic away and enjoy your exciting home theater with acoustics designed specifically for your own room.

Yamaha RX-V1900BL 7.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black)
Amazon Price: $899.00
List Price: $1,399.95

Yamaha RX-V1900BL 7.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver

The RX-V1900 features 1080p-Comaptible HDMI. High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is the first and only digital interface to combine uncompressed high-definition video, multi-channel audio and intelligent format and command data in a single digital interface. HDMI switching, providing the most advanced method of delivering high quality video signals to a home theater system to enable the reproduction of DVD and satellite TV sources with HD quality. HDMI can also send the digital audio signals from sources such as DVD Audio, CD, Dolby Digital and DTS to provide simple components connections.

The RX-V1900 features YPAO automatic system calibration. Yamaha’s YPAO system uses a small microphone and sophisticated equalization to automatically set the best sound for any room, no matter where the speakers are. First it checks the speaker connections and phase of each speaker. Then, it sends out tones which are captured by the microphone to analyze the room acoustics and sets a variety of parameters, such as the speaker size, the distance of the speakers and even the sound pressure level, etc. Until it achieves the best sound conditions for your room and you don't have to do anything!

Adaptive DRC is a new volume control technology that is effective for low-volume listening, such as at night or with headphones. It applies DRC processing to eliminate the volume differences between loud commercials and ordinary programming and to take into account our ears' loss of sensitivity as volume decreases. The compensation is performed automatically, so all dialogue is heard clearly even at low levels, and there are no sudden loud bursts of sound.

Users can enjoy audio in three rooms as well as video in the second room with an extensive array of custom zone control features. These include Main/Zone 2/Zone 3 power controls, front panel selection of XM/FM/AM tuning, volume and input source, Zone 2 video output and on-screen menu display, and Zone 2/3 tone and L/R balance controls for ceiling or wall-mounted speakers. A separate Zone Remote Unit is provided and there is also an RS-232C interface for a touch-panel controller.

The RX-V1900 features surround sound processing with the enhanced capability of 3D CINEMA DSP. By using two presence speakers in addition to the two front and two surround speakers, the sound field is given an extra vertical dimension. Pressing the 3D DSP button provides a sound field that expands both upward and downward. Hi-Fi DSP programs sound more natural, closer to the feeling of actually being in a concert hall with a high ceiling or a small live house where the sound seems to bounce up from the floor. CINEMA DSP programs have an added dimension of height that was previously difficult to achieve, so sounds coming from above have precise localization. When volume is low, CINEMA DSP effects may be difficult to hear. Adaptive DSP Level overcomes this problem by evaluating the difference between the volume level and a reference level, and adjusting the DSP level to ensure optimum effectiveness--that is, the best possible sound.
